The Professor
Kazimierz Demel Medal is an expression of special distinction
and recognition. It is awarded for outstanding scientific
and organizational research achievements as well as for popularizing
knowledge of the sea in the fields of biology, ecology and
fisheries. The Medal is awarded to Polish or foreign, individuals,
institutions or associations, based on nominations submitted
to the Professor Kazimierz Demel Medal Committee. Nominations
can be submitted at any time; those received before 28 February
are considered in March of the same year.
The members of the Committee are current Laureates
(individuals only), the chairperson of the SFI scientific
board, and the SFI director.
The nomination
should include the candidate's personal information and a
description of the activities and achievements for which he/she
should be awarded the Medal.
Nominations for the Medal can be made by the following: Medal
Laureates; the SFI director; the SFI scientific board; the
National Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, PAS; the
scientific boards or department boards of Polish and foreign
scientific institutions and schools of higher learning and
the general assemblies of Polish and foreign scientific or
fisheries associations which are involved in the fields of
marine biology, ecology and fisheries.
The Medal is presented to the laureate by the director of
the SFI in a celebratory manner.
The silver-plated bronze Medal is 90 mm in diameter. It was
designed by the artist Józef Jezierski, and it was minted
at the National Mint in Warsaw in 1991.
