This department was founded in 1974 following the signing of an intergovernmental agreement which is realized by the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia and the NOAA NMFS Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Woods Hole Laboratory in Massachusetts, USA.

The department provides scientific and technical services for the analysis of plankton samples using methods proposed by the contracting party. The laboratory currently offers a wide variety of services for the taxonomic identification of different types of plankton samples as well as for determining size and biological structure. The principle clients of the department's services are the laboratories and institutes of the American National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). When possible, the department also conducts analysis for Canadian and European clients as well as for the other departments of the SFI. Over the course of nearly thirty years, the SFI Szczecin Branch has trained a staff whose qualifications and quality services ensure that the department's services are in high demand and that many long-term agreements are in effect.

The SFI Plankton Sorting and Identification Center in Szczecin is currently cooperating with the following American NOAA/NMFSC centers):

  1. NOAA-NMFS, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Narragansett Laboratory (RI),
  2. NOAA-NMFS, John J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory, Highlands (NJ),
